Add Store Pickup Availability to Shopify Product Pages Without an App
November 5, 2026
Pickup availability on product pages is a native Shopify feature, not an app feature. It appears when the product is stocked at a location with pickup enabled, the location is active, and the theme renders the pickup availability block. Most cases of it not showing are inventory or location settings, not theme bugs.
The setting chain, in the order Shopify checks it
Shopify walks a short chain before showing pickup on a product page. The variant must be tracked and stocked at a location, that location must have pickup switched on in Settings, Locations, and the location must be set to fulfill online orders. Break any link and the block silently does not render, with no error anywhere to explain the silence.
Work the chain from the product outward. Open the variant, confirm inventory exists at the pickup location specifically, not just at your main warehouse. Then open the location and confirm pickup is on. Stores with several locations trip on the middle link most often: stock at location A, pickup enabled at location B, nothing shows anywhere.
The theme half of the problem
Modern Shopify themes render pickup availability as a built in block or section on the product template. If the settings chain is correct and nothing shows, open the theme editor on the product template and check whether the pickup availability element is present and not hidden. Older or heavily customized themes sometimes dropped it during a redesign without anyone noticing until a customer asked.
Dawn and current themes include it by default. Vintage themes may need the pickup availability code added to the product template, which is a documented snippet job rather than an app subscription. Paying monthly for an app to do what the platform already does is the most common wasted line item in this corner of the stack.
What the customer actually sees, and why wording matters
The block shows which locations have the item, usually with a ready time estimate such as usually ready in 24 hours or 2 to 4 days, pulled from your settings. Set those estimates honestly per location. A location that needs two days showing a 24 hour promise manufactures angry doorstep conversations that no theme can fix.
Multi location stores should also check the view when the nearest location is out of stock. The block shows other locations with stock, which is useful, but customers skim. A short line in the product description for high demand items, naming the stocked location, saves the skim readers.

Frequently asked questions
Why is pickup availability not showing on my product page?
In order of likelihood: the variant has no stock at the pickup enabled location, pickup is not switched on for that location, the location does not fulfill online orders, or the theme template is missing the pickup block. Check them in that order and you will find it.
Does pickup availability work per variant?
Yes. Availability is calculated per variant and per location, so a shirt can show pickup ready in medium at one store and nothing in large. That is correct behavior, and it is why variant level inventory accuracy matters more for pickup stores.
Can I offer pickup at a location that does not hold inventory?
Not with the native feature, because availability is driven by stock at that location. Stores that transfer items to a pickup point on order usually use a manual process or an app, and should set the ready estimate to match the transfer time.
Do I need an app for pickup scheduling?
For basic availability display, no. Apps earn their money when you need time slot booking, pickup appointments, or curbside workflows. If customers just need to know it is there and when it is ready, the native feature covers it.
