Before installing anything, check the cart. Many current themes include a cart note field that can be switched on in the theme editor, labelled as an order note at checkout. Renamed honestly, that field does the gift message job for a large share of stores: the customer writes the message, it travels with the order, and it prints on the packing slip. It is an order-level note, not a per-item one, and knowing that limit upfront saves the whole project from being rebuilt later.
If your theme lacks a cart note, the fallback is a small, documented edit: a text area on the cart template wired to the cart note attribute. That is a contained change to one template, not a reason to subscribe to a gifting app.
Order level or item level is the real decision
An order-level message covers the common case: one gift, one recipient, one message. It breaks down in a mixed cart, where one item is a gift and two are for the buyer, or where two gifts go to two people. Stores that sell gifts as a core category hit that wall quickly, and that is the point where a per-item solution, meaning a line item property field on the product page or a proper gifting app, stops being overkill.
Decide by looking at your actual orders. If most gift orders contain a single gift, the cart note is enough and everything else is engineering for an edge case. If multi-recipient gift carts are routine, build per-item from the start.
Where the message has to survive
A gift message that never reaches the person packing the box is worse than no field at all, because the customer believes it was handled. Trace the whole path once, with a test order: the field on the cart, the note visible in the order in the admin, and the note printing on whatever your fulfilment actually uses, whether that is the default packing slip or a fulfilment app.
Also decide what happens to the price paperwork. A gift order should not ship with prices showing, and the message field does not solve that by itself. Note the gift flag where your packing process will see it, not just where your theme displays it.
Keep the field short and honest
Set a character limit that matches a gift card, around 200 characters, and say so next to the field. An unbounded box invites essays your card cannot hold, and the truncated result disappoints exactly the customer who tried hardest. A short line of microcopy helps too: what you write here is printed on the gift card, which sets the tone and the length better than any validation rule.
Do not promise handwriting, specific card designs, or delivery-date miracles in that microcopy unless operations can deliver them every time, including your busiest week. The field is a promise. Keep it to what the packing bench can keep.

Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify have a built-in gift message option?
There is no dedicated gift message feature, but many themes include a cart note field that works as one: enable it in the theme editor and label it for gift messages. The note travels with the order and can print on the packing slip.
What is the difference between an order note and a per-item gift message?
An order note applies to the whole cart, which suits a single gift to one recipient. A per-item message, usually a line item property on the product page, is needed when one cart holds gifts for different people.
Will the gift message print on the packing slip?
It will if your packing slip template includes the order note, which the default does. Verify with a test order through your actual fulfilment flow, since third-party fulfilment apps handle notes differently.
When is a gifting app worth paying for?
When gift orders are a core part of the business and you need per-item messages, gift wrap upsells, or hiding prices across a complex fulfilment setup. For occasional single-gift orders, the cart note covers it free.
