Add a Gift Card Balance Check on Shopify: Stop the Support Tickets

October 30, 2026

Shopify does not give customers a self serve gift card balance page out of the box, which is why balance questions land in your inbox. The workable setup is a dedicated balance check page using an app or a small custom build, linked from the gift card product page, the footer, and every gift card email. It will not remove every ticket, but it removes the repeat ones, which are most of them.

Every store that sells gift cards in any volume runs the same quiet support leak: a customer holding a card, a code half remembered from an email, and no way to answer the simplest question in commerce, how much is on this. Shopify issues the cards, stores the balance, and shows it in your admin, but the customer facing side has no native balance checker, so the question routes to a human, one email at a time.

The fix is a page and a linking habit, not a platform change. Stores skip it because each ticket takes two minutes, and forget that two minutes times every holiday season, forever, is a real cost, paid at exactly the moment the team is busiest.

The three ways to build the page

An app is the honest default for most stores. Balance check apps plug into Shopify's gift card data through the customer or a code entry form and render a result on a page you control. Judge them the way you judge any app that touches checkout adjacent data: what JavaScript it adds and where, whether it loads on every page or only on the balance page, and its monthly cost against the ticket count it removes. An app that loads storewide to serve one page is a bad trade on a fast theme.

A custom build is the second route: a page template with a form that checks the balance through an app extension or a small private service. It keeps the weight off the rest of the store and matches your design exactly, and it costs developer time once instead of rent forever. The third route is the floor, and it is better than nothing: a clearly written page that tells the customer exactly what to send support, the code's last four characters and the purchaser's email, so the two minute ticket becomes a thirty second one. Do the floor today even if you build the real page next month.

Placement is where the value is

A balance page nobody finds is a feature you built for yourself. Link it in four places: the gift card product page, directly under the buy button where the recipient's future self is already a question; the footer, where customers hunt for utilities; the gift card delivery email, which is the document the recipient actually keeps; and your FAQ, under the exact words customers use, check gift card balance, not the words your team uses.

Name the URL plainly, /pages/gift-card-balance or your store's equivalent, so support can paste it from memory and customers can guess it. Then measure: tag the tickets. Most stores find balance questions cluster in the two weeks after big gifting holidays and on Sunday evenings, which tells you the page is working when the cluster shrinks, not when total tickets dip in a quiet month.

The limits to state out loud

A balance page cannot recover a lost code, and it should say so on the page, with the recovery path spelled out: the original purchaser can find the code in their email, and support can reissue to that email with verification. Putting that on the page converts the angriest tickets, lost card panic, into a procedure the customer can start alone at midnight.

Partial balances and multi card orders are the other friction. Customers think in gifts, not in Shopify's one balance per code model. The page should explain, in one sentence, that each code carries its own balance and several codes can be applied at checkout one after another. Half the confused tickets after a balance check are this misunderstanding wearing a new hat, and one sentence is cheaper than all of them.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify have a built in gift card balance check for customers?

No. Balances are visible in your Shopify admin, and a customer sees the remaining balance when they apply a card at checkout, but there is no native customer facing page where a recipient can enter a code and see the balance. That gap is why stores add a page through an app or a custom build.

Where should the balance check link live?

On the gift card product page under the buy button, in the footer, in the gift card delivery email, and in the FAQ under the words customers actually search for. Placement decides the value: a balance page that is not linked from the delivery email misses the recipients who need it most.

What does a balance check app cost the store in speed?

It depends entirely on where it loads. A well built one loads only on the balance page and costs the rest of the store nothing. Check before installing, and recheck after: an app that injects storewide JavaScript to power one utility page is taxing every visitor for a feature few use.

What should the page say about lost gift card codes?

That the balance page cannot recover them, and what to do instead: the purchaser's original email contains the code, and support can reissue it to that email after verification. Stating this on the page turns a panic ticket into a self serve procedure.
