Add a Backorder Notice on a Shopify Product Page That Buyers Actually Read

October 30, 2026

A backorder notice works when it does three things: appears before the buy button, not after checkout; names a ship window you can actually keep; and follows the item into the cart. On Shopify that means continuing selling when out of stock on the right products, a visible notice block on the product page tied to inventory state, and the same wording in the cart and the confirmation email. Vague coming soon language is where disputes start.

Backorders are a reasonable business and a recurring self inflicted wound. The product sells through, someone enables continue selling, orders keep coming, and the page says nothing, so the buyer reasonably believes the item ships tomorrow. Three weeks later you have a chargeback that says item not received, and the buyer is, from everything your store showed them, correct.

The notice is not a legal shield exercise, though it helps there too. It is a conversion decision: a clear backorder message filters out the buyers who would have disputed, keeps the buyers who are happy to wait, and those second buyers are some of the most patient, least return prone customers a store gets. Hiding the wait does the opposite sorting.

Set the inventory behavior first

In Shopify, the switch is per product and per variant: track quantity, and continue selling when out of stock. Turn it on deliberately, product by product, for items with a reliable restock or a make to order operation behind them. Never turn it on storewide in a bulk edit at midnight, which is how stores end up backordering items that are discontinued, from suppliers who have closed, at a scale that becomes a refund project.

Decide your ship window from the operation, not from optimism. If the restock lands in two to three weeks and packing takes two days, the page says ships in three to four weeks. The padding feels like it will cost sales, and it does, a few. The alternative, a missed promise, costs the sale anyway plus the dispute fee plus the customer. An honest window that you beat by a few days generates the only good version of this email: it shipped early.

Place the notice where the decision happens

The notice belongs directly above or below the buy button, in the same visual weight as the price, driven by the inventory state so it appears when stock runs out and disappears when it returns. Most themes need a small block added for this: a conditional section in the product template that checks availability and renders your backorder text. Hard coding the sentence into the description is the common mistake, because descriptions do not know the inventory, and the notice stays up after the restock, training customers to ignore it.

Repeat the message in the cart as a line under the item, and in the order confirmation email, because the buyer who agreed on Tuesday will not remember on day twelve. The cart repetition is also your evidence of a fair transaction: the terms were visible at decision, at payment, and after payment, which is the sequence dispute reviewers look for and almost never find complete.

What the wording must contain

Three elements, in plain words: that the item is on backorder, when it ships as a window with dates or a week count, and what the buyer's options are, wait, or cancel any time before shipping for a full refund. That third element is the one stores resist and the one that does the most work, because an easy exit is what makes waiting feel safe enough to choose.

Keep a log of the windows you promised, by date. When a supplier slips, and one will, the log tells you exactly which orders carry which promise, and those customers get an email from you before the window closes, with the new date and the cancel option repeated. Stores survive supplier slips with their reviews intact by sending that email. They get destroyed by silence, every time, in every category we have seen.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the continue selling setting in Shopify?

On each product and variant, in the inventory section: enable track quantity, then check continue selling when out of stock. Apply it deliberately to products with a real restock or production path behind them, not as a storewide default.

What should a backorder notice say?

That the item is on backorder, the ship window in plain dates or weeks, and that the buyer can cancel any time before shipping for a full refund. Put it beside the buy button, repeat it in the cart, and repeat it again in the confirmation email.

How long a backorder window will customers accept?

Longer than stores fear, when it is honest and the exit is easy. Two to four weeks is routine for wanted items with clear communication. What customers do not accept is finding out late, or a window that moves silently. A realistic window kept beats an optimistic window missed.

What happens when a backorder restock is delayed?

Email every affected order before the promised window closes, with the new date and the cancellation option restated. Use your promise log to find them. Buyers forgive a delay they hear about from the store. They dispute a delay they discover by checking a tracking page that never moves.
