# How do you speed up a Shopify theme's search page? | Theme Stack Guide

Cap the initial results per page, lazy-load filter facets below the fold, and keep the result grid server-rendered. Most slow search pages are slow because they ship every filter and every product card as client-side JavaScript before the shopper sees anything.

## Why search pages are slow

On many stores the search page is the heaviest page on the site. It renders the full filter panel (every facet, every swatch, every price slider), the full result grid with hover images, and often a third-party search app that injects its own JavaScript bundle. On mobile this can mean hundreds of DOM nodes and several render-blocking requests before the first result is visible. Shoppers who typed a query are the most motivated visitors you have, and the page punishes them for it.

## Cap results per page

Set the results limit to what fits one or two mobile screens, often 12 to 24 products. More results per page do not help shoppers; infinite scroll or pagination with fewer, faster pages converts better than one giant page that takes five seconds to become interactive. If the theme defaults to 48 or more results per page, change it in the search template settings and measure the difference.

## Lazy-load the filter panel

Facets are important but they do not need to render before the results. Defer filter scripts until the shopper interacts with them or until the main grid is painted. Collapse facet groups by default so the initial HTML is small. If the search app injects its filters as a blocking script in the head, check whether the app offers an async or deferred loading option; most modern search apps do, and it is often one toggle.

## Keep the grid server-rendered

A search result grid rendered by Liquid arrives as HTML and shows content immediately. A grid rendered by client-side JavaScript arrives as an empty container and fills in after the bundle downloads, parses, and calls the search API. On a slow phone that gap can be seconds of blank screen. If the theme ships a JavaScript-rendered search grid, look for a setting to switch to the native template, or ask whether the search app can inject server-side markup instead of client-side widgets.

## Images are the other half of the problem

Search grids multiply image cost: 24 product cards means 24 images, often with hover swap images doubling the count. Make sure result images use responsive sizes (small on mobile, not the 2048px master file), add loading="lazy" to every card below the fold, and disable hover image swaps on touch devices where there is no hover. Each of these is a one-line change in the card snippet and together they can cut the search page's image payload by more than half.

## Measure before and after

Run the search page through a speed test on a real query before changing anything, then after each change. Watch the largest contentful paint and the time to interactive on mobile specifically, since that is where search traffic concentrates. A search page that goes from five seconds to two seconds is not a nice-to-have; it is one of the highest-ROI theme changes a store can make, because it sits directly in the path of buyers who already told you what they want.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why is Shopify search slow on some themes?

Search slows down when the theme loads large predictive search libraries, queries without limits, or renders results with heavy image handling. Stores with big catalogs feel it first. The fix is usually limiting result counts, lazy loading result images, and removing app scripts that hook into search.

### How fast should Shopify predictive search feel?

Results should start appearing within a few hundred milliseconds of typing on a normal connection. If shoppers can type a full query and wait, something is wrong: check app embeds first, then the theme's search JavaScript, then catalog size effects.

### Does predictive search affect SEO?

Indirectly. Search itself is an internal tool, but slow search pushes shoppers to bounce or to use filters instead, and the underlying performance problems usually also slow the pages search engines do rank. Fixing search speed tends to fix broader theme performance too.
