Set Up Preorders on Shopify Without an App

November 3, 2026

You can run simple preorders on Shopify without an app by using a dedicated product template with preorder wording, a clear expected ship date on the page and in confirmation emails, and inventory settings that allow selling past zero only on preorder items. Complex deposits and split fulfilment are where the native setup runs out.

Decide what kind of preorder you are actually running

There are two different promises hiding under one word. A preorder for a product with a firm production date is a scheduling problem. A preorder that funds production, where the run happens only if orders cover it, is a financing problem with customer money. The page copy, refund terms, and communication rhythm differ completely, and mixing them is how stores end up with chargebacks from customers who thought they were buying stock.

Write the promise down before touching settings: the expected ship window, whether payment is taken now or on shipment, and what happens if the date slips. Every technical choice after this is just implementing that paragraph.

The native build

Duplicate your product template and make a preorder version: the buy button text reads as preorder, an expected ship date block sits directly under it, and the delivery estimate language replaces your usual in stock wording. Keep preorder products on this template only, so no in stock item ever inherits the wording by accident. In inventory settings, preorder items need to sell when out of stock; everything else in your store should not, which is another reason the template and product set stay quarantined.

Then fix the paper trail. The product page date, the cart note, and the order confirmation email must all carry the same ship window, because the confirmation email is the document a customer, or a payment processor, will quote back at you. A preorder page with a date and a confirmation email without one is a dispute waiting for its moment.

Communication is the real system

Apps mostly sell automation for updates, and you can replace that automation with discipline at small volume: an update email when production starts, one if the date moves, one when shipping begins. Silence is what turns a patient preorder customer into a refund request. A two week slip announced early costs you almost nothing; the same slip discovered by the customer costs you the order and occasionally the account relationship with your processor.

Cap the run. A native setup has no elegant machinery for deposits, partial payments, or splitting an order into in stock now and preorder later. If your average preorder basket mixes both, or you need deposits rather than full payment, that is the honest point to buy an app, and buying it then is cheaper than refunding a tangled launch.

The test order that saves you

Before launch, place a real order yourself on a phone. Read only what the store sends you, nothing you know from the admin. If the confirmation does not state the ship window plainly, fix the email before you fix anything else. Check the product page the same way, as a stranger: is the date findable in five seconds, is the button honest, is the refund policy for preorders one click away.

Small volume preorders, one product, one date, full payment, are completely workable this way, and plenty of stores run their first launch natively. Scale is what breaks it, not the concept. Run the simple version cleanly and let its friction, not a sales page, tell you when to tool up.

Frequently asked questions

Can Shopify take preorders without an app?

Yes, for simple cases. A dedicated product template with preorder wording and a ship date, inventory set to sell past zero on those products only, and confirmation emails carrying the same date will run a clean one product preorder. Deposits and split orders need an app.

Should I charge for preorders at purchase or at shipping?

Either can work, but the page must say which, in plain words, next to the button. Charging at purchase is simpler natively and standard for production funded runs. Whatever you choose, the confirmation email must repeat it and state the ship window.

What breaks first in a native preorder setup?

Mixed baskets. An order combining in stock and preorder items has no native split fulfilment, so one part waits for the other or gets handled manually. If mixed baskets are your norm rather than the exception, that is the point an app earns its cost.

How do I stop in stock products showing preorder wording?

Quarantine by template. Only preorder products use the preorder template, and only they allow selling when out of stock. Audit the template assignments before launch; a single in stock bestseller on the wrong template creates the confusion you are trying to avoid.
