Use an app, or use Shopify B2B volume pricing if you sell to businesses. Dawn and the theme editor cannot do volume discounts on their own: there is no built-in tiered pricing block. An app like Kaktus Quantity Breaks or Vitals adds a tier table to the product page, buy 2 save 10 percent, buy 3 save 20 percent, and applies the discount automatically at checkout. Since April 2026, native B2B volume pricing is available on every paid Shopify plan, not just Plus.

## First, the honest limit: the theme cannot do this alone

Volume discounts, also called quantity breaks or tiered pricing, are the simplest kind of bundle on Shopify: the more a shopper buys of one product, the bigger the discount. Buy 2, save 10 percent. Buy 3, save 20 percent. The theme editor cannot build this, and Dawn has no tiered pricing block, no quantity break setting, and no discount table. The theme can display a discount table once an app creates it, but it cannot create the discount itself, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling a tutorial that ends in an app install anyway.

That limit decides the whole job. There are three routes, and they suit different stores: an app, which is the fastest for most stores; native Shopify B2B volume pricing, which is the right route if you sell to businesses; and a custom Liquid build, which is the right route if you have a developer and a very specific pricing rule. Pick the route by who the discount is for, not by which one looks cheapest.

## The app route, for most stores

An app is the fastest route, and it needs no code. Apps like Kaktus Quantity Breaks, Vitals, and Ember Bundle add a tier table to the product page and apply the discount automatically at checkout through Shopify Functions. A typical setup is three tiers: single at the standard price, duo at 2 items with 10 to 15 percent off, marked Most Popular, and trio at 3 items with 20 to 25 percent off. The app shows the discounted pricing and the pricing tier on the product page, the cart page, and the checkout pop-up, so the buyer sees the saving before they commit.

Prices vary, and they are worth checking before you install: Kaktus starts around $9.99 a month, Vitals includes volume discounts in its All-in-One plan at $29.99 a month with a 7-day free trial, and Ember Bundle has a free plan covering up to 10 bundle orders a month, with a Pro plan at $25 a month. The app adds a block in the theme editor, usually above the buy buttons, and you can style it there. The mistake is installing three discount apps at once: pick one, set three tiers, and test it with a real order before you publish.

## The native B2B route, for business buyers

If you sell to businesses, use Shopify B2B volume pricing instead of an app. On April 2, 2026, Shopify moved native B2B features off the $2,300-a-month Plus tier and onto every paid plan, so Basic at $39 a month, Grow, and Advanced all get volume pricing and quantity rules now. You define the breaks, for example 10, 50, and 100 units, plus minimum and maximum quantities, and case packs sold in cartons of 12, and the discounts apply in the cart for tagged B2B customers.

The catch is the display. The price-tier table that shows buyers the volume breaks is gated to Plus, so on non-Plus plans the discounts apply silently in the cart, and buyers do not see the tier table on the product page unless you add it with Liquid. If the table matters to your buyers, and it usually does, because a hidden discount does not sell anything, budget for the Liquid work or for Plus. The B2B route also needs the app embed turned on: in the theme editor, under App embeds, confirm the B2B app is toggled on and saved, or the pricing will not render on the storefront.

## When volume discounts are the wrong tool

A volume discount is not always the right offer. If your product is sold by the unit and almost nobody buys more than one, the tier table adds clutter and a decision the buyer did not need. If your product is a subscription, the quantity is usually fixed and the discount confuses the subscription choice. And if your margins are thin, a 20 percent discount on three units can cost more than the extra sale earns, especially if the buyer would have bought two units at full price anyway.

The test is simple: if fewer than one order in ten buys more than one unit, the discount is decoration. Keep it where bulk buying is real, in consumables, in B2B, and in products people genuinely stock up on, and drop it where it is not. And set the tiers from your margins, not from a round number: a 10 percent discount on a product with a 30 percent margin is a fair trade, and a 25 percent discount on the same product is a loss dressed as a promotion.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I add volume discounts without an app?

No. Dawn and the theme editor have no built-in tiered pricing block, and there is no setting that adds quantity breaks. You need an app, a custom Liquid build, or Shopify B2B volume pricing. The theme editor can display the discount table once an app creates it, but it cannot create the discount itself.

### Is Shopify B2B volume pricing available without Plus?

Yes, since April 2, 2026, native B2B features moved off the Plus-only tier and onto every paid plan. Basic, Grow, Advanced, and Plus all get volume pricing and quantity rules. The catch is that the price-tier display table is still gated to Plus on the product page, so on other plans the discount applies silently in the cart unless you add the table with Liquid.

### How many tiers should a volume discount have?

A typical setup is three tiers: single at the standard price, duo at 2 items with 10 to 15 percent off, marked Most Popular, and trio at 3 items with 20 to 25 percent off. Keep it to three tiers, because more tiers confuse the buyer, and set the middle tier as the default so shoppers land on it already picked.

### Can volume discounts work across different products?

Yes, if the app supports it. Mix and match lets shoppers combine different products to reach a tier, while same-variant rules count only identical variants. Mix and match suits a collection of similar items; same-variant suits a single product sold in bulk. Pick the one that matches how your customers actually buy.
