How to Add a Gift Message Option to a Shopify Cart

October 17, 2026

Shopify does not include a gift message field by default, but there are three solid ways to add one: the cart notes box relabeled for gifts, a line item property on the product page, or a gift options app. For most stores the cart note method is enough. It is free, works with every theme, and the message lands in the order details where your fulfillment team can print it.

Option one: turn cart notes into a gift message

Most themes include an order notes box on the cart page or in the cart drawer, controlled from the theme editor. Enable it, then edit the label in your themes language settings from order notes to something like gift message, printed on the packing slip. Tell shoppers on the cart page that the message is included free, and remind your fulfillment team where it appears in the order timeline.

The limitation is scope: one note per order, not per item. For a single gift that is perfect. For a cart with three gifts going to three people, the shopper has to write all instructions in one box, which works if your team reads carefully but is not elegant.

Option two: a gift message per product

When per item messages matter, a line item property on the product page is the classic approach. The shopper ticks this is a gift on the product, types the message, and it attaches to that line item in the cart and the order. Some themes and many gift option apps support this without code; otherwise it is a small theme edit adding a checkbox and text field to the product form.

Per item messages pair naturally with gift wrap upsells, since the same checkbox area can offer wrap for a fee and the message free. Keep the wrap optional and the message unconditional: charging for a handwritten or printed note reads as nickel and diming and quietly suppresses gift orders.

Option three: gift option apps and checkout

Apps bundle message fields, wrap options, gift receipts, and delivery date pickers into one widget, and the better ones match your theme styling. They make sense for stores where gifting is a major share of revenue, especially around holidays when volume makes manual note reading error prone.

True checkout page message fields are limited to Shopify Plus or to apps using checkout extensions on eligible plans. For everyone else, the cart or product page is where the message must be captured, so make it obvious: shoppers who cannot find the field assume it does not exist and some will leave to find a store that offers it.

Making sure the message actually ships

A message field only works if operations honor it. Add the message to your packing slip template or your fulfillment checklist, and test a real order end to end: place it, find the message in the admin, and confirm it prints where the packer looks. Most gift message failures are process failures, not theme failures.

Also confirm what happens with draft orders, shop app orders, and accelerated checkouts like Shop Pay, where the cart step may be skipped. If accelerated checkout bypasses your message field, say so on the product page and invite shoppers to check out normally for gift orders. Clear expectations beat a missing card on delivery day.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cart note visible to the customer after ordering?

The note appears in the order details in your Shopify admin and in the order confirmation data your team uses, but it is not shown back to the customer in their confirmation email by default. If confirming the message matters, mention in the cart that messages are printed on the packing slip, which sets the expectation clearly.

Can I charge for gift wrap but keep the message free?

Yes, and that is the common pattern. The wrap is a physical add on with a real cost, while the message is a printed note. Keep the message free and unconditional; charging for it measurably discourages gift orders. Most gift apps and many themes support exactly this split.

Where does the gift message appear in Shopify admin?

Cart notes appear in the notes section of the order page and in the timeline. Line item property messages appear under the individual item in the order. Train whoever packs orders to check the right place, and add it to the packing slip so it cannot be missed on busy days.

Does the gift message field work with Shop Pay or Apple Pay?

Accelerated checkouts can skip the cart page, which means the shopper may never see a cart based message field. Product page fields survive because they are captured when the item is added. If gifting is central to your store, prefer a product page field and note the limitation on the cart page for express shoppers.
